Marana Police Lieutenant to attend FBI National Academy

The Marana Police Department will be represented at the next FBI National Academy (FBI NA). Lieutenant Tim Brunenkant will attend the 10-week academy beginning July 8.

The FBI National Academy is dedicated to improving the standards of law enforcement. There are four academy sessions held each year (Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall sessions) and Brunentkant is attending the summer session ‘Class #277’ from July 8th to September 13th.

“This program will assist in my personal and professional growth as a lieutenant with the Police Department,” Brunenkant said.

Each class consists of 250 law enforcement executives from throughout the United States with approximately 30 international law enforcement officers. In order to attend, a candidate must be a Lieutenant or higher, and must be nominated by their Chief of Police. 

“I am very excited for the challenge that is ahead of me,” said Brunenkant. “This program has been a longtime career goal of mine, and I am truly honored and humbled for the opportunity to be attending.”

The program consists of undergraduate and graduate level classes that focus on leadership, executive development, and health and wellness. These courses are taught by FBI instructors and professional educators from the University of Virginia.

“The coursework I will be taking includes Critical Analysis of Present Day Policing, Managing Organizational Change and Development, and Advanced Concepts and Wellness,” Brunenkant said. “I plan to bring back what I have learned, and share with the Marana Police Department and the Town.”

In addition to course work, physical fitness is a big component of the FBI NA program.  Attendees participate in daily workouts consisting of weekly ‘fitness challenges’. The weekly challenges get more difficult each week, and prepares participants for the final challenge called ‘The Yellow Brick Road’, which is a 6-mile run/obstacle course through the wooded trails of Quantico, VA.

 The final component of the program is networking and enrichment. There are several themed events that bring the 250 students together to share their thoughts and experiences. There is a Silent Auction night to raise money for charity, International Night where the international students present food(s) from their region to eat, and Patch/Coin Collection Night where students exchange items from their agencies.  

Traffic Alert: Construction of Silverbell Road Sidewalk Infill Project

Beginning Monday, July 1, the Town of Marana and its contractor, Falcone Brothers & Associates, will be constructing new sidewalks, upgrading various curb ramps, improving various driveway aprons, and installing handrail along the south and west sides of N. Silverbell Road from N. Silvermoon Way to N. Wade Road. Also, new sidewalks and curb ramps will be constructed along a segment of N. Continental Reserve Loop in front of the Quik Mart convenience store. The purpose of this project is to provide pedestrians with a continuous, safe and accessible way along N. Silverbell Road from W. Twin Peaks Road to N. Wade Road. The project is scheduled to be completed by October 1.  

Construction crews will typically be active Monday through Friday, from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. During these hours, adjacent to the designated work areas, right-lane closures will be implemented along southbound/eastbound Silverbell Road, southbound Continental Reserve Loop, and at various intersecting side streets and driveways. Directional signs and traffic control devices will be set up to detour vehicles around the work area. Access to businesses will be maintained at all times.

For your safety and that of the contractor’s personnel, please comply with traffic control devices, flagging personnel, and/or detour signs.

 Travel time through the project area may increase during construction so please adjust your schedule accordingly. Construction may restrict traffic lanes and create congestion. Taking alternate routes is suggested.

Traffic Alert: Twin Peaks-Blue Bonnet Road Gravity Sewer Project

On Monday, July 1, the contractor will begin sewer installation along Hartman Lane between the cul-de-sac on Hartman Lane, just south of Eaglestone Loop, and Camino Horizante. (SEE MAP) This closure will be in place 24-hours per day.

• The intersection of Eaglestone Loop and Hartman Lane will be closed.

• Southbound only turn movements will be permitted from the cul-de-sac to Hartman Lane.

• Motorists wanting access to Eaglestone Loop can use Fireopal Way as an alternate route

• North and southbound travel will be permitted on Hartman Lane between Cortaro Farms Road and the cul-de-sac just south of Eaglestone Loop.

• There is no access to Cortaro Farms Road from Hartman Lane north of Eaglestone Loop.

Residents and the traveling public should watch for informational signs with detour information.

Emergency access will always be provided.

This is a series of traffic alerts that will be issued throughout the construction of the Pima County Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department’s Twin Peaks-Blue Bonnet Road Gravity Sewer Project. These alerts will announce construction, detours and street closure information as it affects traffic. Please watch for updated traffic alerts as construction activities progress.

Pima County Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department (RWRD) and their contractor, Achen Gardner, have begun installation of a 15-inch sewer interceptor line along Hartman Lane, between Linda Vista Boulevard and Cortaro Farms Road. The contractor began work south of the intersection at Cortaro Farms Road and is working northward toward Linda Vista Boulevard. The sewer installation along Hartman Lane is expected to take approximately 5 months to complete. 

Sections of Hartman Lane will be completely closed to motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists in the area where the contractor is working.  

The above work schedule may be impacted by weather or mechanical failure.

During the sewer pipe installation, there will be extensive trenching and large equipment entering and exiting the work area.                                                                                                                                           

 Motorists should remain alert and use caution when driving near construction activities.

Manager's Message: Marana budget sets the stage for a bright future

Marana Town Manager Jamsheed Mehta wrote a Manager's Message for the Marana News/Explorer News about the recently approved Fiscal Year 2020 Budget:

Our fiscal year comes to an end June 30, and we begin a new phase of projects and initiatives as outlined in the 2019-20 budget. Our total budget for the new year is approximately $143 million, a year-over-year increase of 1.5 percent. Of that total, $73 million is dedicated to operating costs, $57 million to capital expenditures and $12 million to debt service.

The latest edition of our budget exhibits the Town of Marana’s balanced approach to responsible fiscal policy and positive investment in the community. Every year, we examine closely our goals and accomplishments during the budget development process. We do this to make sure that allocations are aligned with need, and that strategies are resulting in the appropriate outcomes. 

The Town of Marana will continue with the development of its Make Marana 2040 General Plan in the next fiscal year. As the community grows to a likely population of over 50,000 at the 2020 census count, it is more important than ever to make sure we are planning well for the future. 

The General Plan will be a vital document to guide Marana’s community for the coming decades. 

Marana will also be completing its update to the Land Development Code, the Parks, Recreation, Trails and Open Space Master Plan, Water Master Plan, Wastewater Conveyance System Plan and North Marana Drainage Study. These critical analyses will provide a road map to meet potential challenges and find new opportunities for our community. 

Town of Marana has historically been committed to the highest level of service for our residents and business customers, and that tradition continues in the Fiscal Year 2020 budget with several investments. 

Strategic software deployments, when implemented effectively, can streamline internal services and lead to better outcomes for customers. Next fiscal year, we are investing in the development of a single software solution to manage our permitting and licensing services. This is one of our most active and dynamic service areas, with steady streams of daily customers and long-term projects, and its successful coordination involves multiple internal divisions, and outside entities, both public and private. By investing in a unifying platform, these diverse interests can be brought together for the best outcome to the customer and resident.

Capital outlay projects make up 40 percent of expenditures for fiscal year 2020.

Investments in physical infrastructure pay dividends for every aspect of the community, from the commercial sector to daily commuters to sports and recreation teams. In total, capital outlay projects account for 40 percent of expenditures for fiscal year 2020. This translates to Marana contributing $58 million for community investments. The outlay projects will address facilities in the neediest of areas and projects that will affect all residents.

One of these community investments is improving a Colonia-designated Marana neighborhood with $3.8 million in improvements. The Adonis neighborhood project will include rehabilitating the existing sanitary sewer conveyance system, addressing drainage issues and completing a road extension that serves as a secondary access point. The rehabilitation of the sanitary sewer conveyance system and drainage projects will address potential health and environmental issues that could be triggered by aging infrastructure. The road extension serving as a secondary access and slight grade changes will improve resident safety during storm events and other potential emergencies. The town is committed to the safety of all its residents and all neighborhoods; prioritizing these vital projects will address potential long-term problems.

This year the town will also invest in water infrastructure in the amount of $21 million that will help plan for one interconnected water and reclamation system. Unregulated water compounds such as PFOA, PFOS, and 1-4, Dioxane are concerns for cities and towns across the country, including Marana. We have identified water treatment campuses as a priority in order to lower the compound levels below the health advisory recommendations in affected areas. The town has chosen to make this proactive, voluntary investment in the quality of our water supply, and substantial construction of the project is expected in the coming year. 

Roads are always a top priority in Marana, with $16 million dedicated to road improvements. Key projects include the Camino De Oeste Road Restoration, Lon Adams Road Reconstruction, and Avra Valley Road Reconstruction. 

Bringing new parks and outdoor recreational opportunities is a consistent priority for our community. Construction of the first phase of the El Rio Preserve project will exhibit Marana’s natural features, sights, and bring new visitors. This first phase of the project consists of a trailhead plaza with interpretive signage, sitting area with benches, pedestrian walking path, native plants and water harvesting basins, and a large observation deck for viewing wildlife and birdwatching in the preserve. 

The Honea Heights Pocket Park is slated for construction and in the coming fiscal year for $272 thousand. This park will provide much-needed community amenities to a Colonia-designated Marana neighborhood. 

These strategic investments represented in the FY 2019-2020 budget are necessary and sound. They meet the needs of the community, and pave the way for future generations of Marana residents to enjoy our way of life. Through commitment to our organization’s core values and the focus areas outlined in our Strategic Plan, we are able to take limited resources and turn them into remarkable outcomes for the residents and businesses of Marana, and the team members who serve them.

Make Marana General Plan 2040 Open House Overview

The second and final set of open houses for the Make Marana 2040 General Plan were held on June 19 and 20, 2019 at 6:00 PM.  The June 19th open houses was held at the Marana Municipal Complex and the open house on the 20th was held at the Wheeler Taft Abbett Sr. Library. The objectives for this set of open houses were to:

• Provide an update on the General Plan process and themes;

• Present some of the major updates from the 2010 General Plan; and

• Receive feedback on the draft goals and policies.

What Happened?

A total of 60 people attended the two open houses. Upon arriving, each attendee was asked to identify on a map, generally, where they live or work in Marana. This was done to see what areas of the town were represented in the open house. Attendees at the June 19th open house were widespread, but primarily reside in the area within and surrounding Downtown, including the Gladden Farms and San Lucas subdivisions. Attendees at the June 20th open house were mostly from communities along Silverbell Road, such as Continental Ranch.

The open house began with a short presentation informing attendees of the status of the General Plan Update, the organization of the General Plan, and the results from the first three workshops, and some of the important updates from the 2010 General Plan. After the presentation, the meeting concluded with an open house format in which attendees could view banners related to the three General Plan themes, as well as the draft Future Land Use Map, Circulation Map, and goals and policies. Comment cards were made available for any comments that attendees had throughout the open house.

OFFICIAL: Clear bag policy implemented for Marana 4th of July event

MARANA – New safety requirements have been implemented for the 2019 Town of Marana Star Spangled Spectacular held on July 4, 5-9:30 PM, at Crossroads at Silverbell District Park. With some exceptions, event attendants are now required to adhere to the “clear bag” policy prior to entering the park.

Items permitted into the event:

(This is not an exhaustive list of permitted items)

• Clear plastic bags, purses, or totes

• One-gallon clear plastic freezer bags

• Small clutch bags, approximately the size of a hand

• Diaper bags for infants/toddler needs

• Strollers and wagons

• Sealed, unopened non-alcoholic drinks

• Coolers, empty canisters, and food (subject to search)

• Blankets, lawn/camping chairs for seating.

• Shade tents are permitted, but must be taken down if becomes a hazard. Staking is NOT permitted.

Items NOT permitted into the event:

• Bags, purses, and totes that are not clear plastic (prohibited bags may not be placed inside a clear bag in order to gain entry)

• Backpacks / Fanny packs

• Mesh bags

• Illegal drugs

• Outside alcohol (alcohol will be available for purchase at the event. Proceeds benefit the Marana Heritage Conservancy)

• Pets are not permitted in the park with the exception of service animals.

• Glass containers

Town of Marana staff is dedicated to providing a fun and safe environment for the community to celebrate Independence Day. This year, the entire park will be fenced off, and designated entrances will be monitored by security. If you see something, say something. Report activity to Town staff and police officers on-site.

Bag checks will be conducted at each of the entrances and at each of the three shuttle locations throughout Continental Ranch. Shuttles are free, and will run from 4-11 P.M.

Shuttle locations:

• Between Safeway and Twin Peaks Elementary School located at the intersection of Twin Peaks Road and Silverbell Road. (Parking available at both sites)

• Coyote Trail Elementary School located at 8000 N. Silverbell Road.

• Continental Reserve Professional Plaza located at 8333 N. Silverbell Road.

Travel Alert: Eastbound Interstate 10 closed at Ina Road overnight June 17

Eastbound Interstate 10 between Ina and Orange Grove roads is scheduled to close overnight Monday, June 17, for overhead message sign work. All traffic must exit and will be detoured onto the eastbound frontage road between 10 p.m. Monday and 5 a.m. Tuesday, June 18. 

Ina and Orange Grove roads will also close to all through-traffic at I-10 during those hours.

Motorists who need to cross I-10 should use Cortaro or Sunset roads or Ruthrauff Road/El Camino del Cerro during the closure.

Drivers should expect the following additional restrictions:

• Westbound Ina Road will close at the I-10 interchange. All traffic will be directed to the westbound I-10 entrance ramp. Motorists will not have access to eastbound I-10.

• Eastbound Ina Road will close to traffic at Starcommerce Way.  All traffic must turn left onto Starcommerce Way (except for traffic to local businesses), and all vehicles will be directed to the eastbound frontage road.

• Westbound Orange Grove Road will close at the I-10 interchange. All traffic will be directed to the westbound I-10 entrance ramp. Motorists will not have access to eastbound I-10.

• Vehicles on eastbound I-10 will not have access to eastbound Ina Road or eastbound Orange Grove Road.

• Vehicles on westbound I-10 will not have access to westbound Ina Road or westbound Orange Grove Road.

Law enforcement officers will help direct traffic during the closure.

Traffic Alert: Ina Beautification

Southern Arizona Paving, in conjunction with the Town of Marana, will be installing monuments in the median at each end of the boundaries of the Ina Road Beautification project beginning Monday, June 17th and ending by Wednesday, June 19th.  Traffic lanes next to the median will be closed in each direction of travel at both locations.

One monument is located west of Ulene Place and the other monument is on the west side of the Canyon Del Oro Wash Bridge. Work hours are from 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Traffic Alert: Scenic Drive

Portions of Scenic Drive will be closed on Monday, June 17.

 Scenic Drive will be closed for construction operations on Monday, June 17. Road closed signs will mark the construction zone between 9021 and 9011 residences. The construction zone is closed to the public and should never be entered. 

Access to 9021 N Scenic Drive and any residences north will need to use Twin Peaks/Silverbell Road to the north. Access to 9011 N Scenic Drive and any residence south will need to use Pima Farms Road to the south. 

For Residents of Scenic Drive: A sign will be placed at each driveway along Scenic Drive with an arrow showing the direction of ingress/egress for that day. We will make every effort to keep this direction the same throughout the day. 

If garbage cans are within the construction zone, they will be moved outside of the zone to allow for pickup. Our crews will help with mail delivery access if mailboxes are within the construction zone.

Traffic Alert: Tangerine Farms Road & Rillito Village Trail Intersection

Sunland Asphalt is removing and replacing asphalt at the intersection of Tangerine Farms Rd. and Rillito Village Trail for the Town of Marana. Sunland is starting work on Monday, June 17th and completing work on Monday, June 24th. Working hours on the 17th to the 19th will start at 4:00 a.m. and end at 5:00 p.m.

There is going to be a complete closure at this intersection for Rillito Village Trail from Thursday, June 20th to Saturday, June 22nd. It will be shut down from 4:00 a.m. on Thursday the 20th and re-open Saturday at 12:00 p.m. on the 22nd. This project includes asphalt replacement, utility adjustments, and traffic striping.

Manager's Message: Enjoy the summertime in Marana

Free music is a feature of the Star Spangled Spectacular.

School is out, the temperature is rising and summer is upon us! At the Town of Marana, we look forward to the summer months because there is so much to do in our community. 

Celebrate our nation’s birthday this Fourth of July at Marana’s Star Spangled Spectacular. This annual event at Crossroads at Silverbell District Park (7548 N. Silverbell Road) has become a regional draw, attracting thousands of people from around the community and beyond. 

Because of the large crowds, we have been working hard to create a safe environment for everyone. This year, the entirety of the park will be fenced, and members of the public will enter through designated entrances. With the exception of diaper bags, a clear bag rule has been instated, and bag checks will be conducted upon entry. 

We are excited about our line-up of entertainment. Our musical acts span a wide variety of genres, including country, pop, ’90s alternative, grunge and classic rock. To learn more about our musical attractions and much more, visit our website at MaranaEvents.com. 

In addition to our signature events, we love providing smaller community experiences to our residents. We have three free movie showings throughout the summer, including “A Wrinkle in Time” this Saturday, June 15, and “A Dog’s Way Home” on July 20. Both events will be held at the Ora Mae Harn Park pool (13250 N. Lon Adams Road). On Aug. 17, we move from the pool to the Marana Heritage River Park Splash Pad (12375 N. Heritage Park Drive) for a showing of “Hotel Transylvania.” 

The pool at Ora Mae Harn Park, the Marana Heritage River Park Splash Pad and the Crossroads at Silverbell District Park Splash Pad are open every day for the summer, and all three amenities are free of charge. 

Our events aren’t just about entertainment. We also encourage civic engagement. On June 19 and 20, we will hold our “Make Marana 2040 General Plan Update” community open houses. These open houses provide opportunities for the public to review the draft of the Make Marana 2040 General Plan and provide feedback. Our Animal Services Division has much to offer during these summer months, including free microchip clinics. We are partnering with No Kill Pima County for a free microchip clinic on Saturday, June 23 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Marana Community Center (13250 N. Lon Adams Road.) 

Sports Camps for kids are new this summer.

Marana Parks and Recreation has a wide variety of programs for every age and interest. There are several camp options, including art camps, horse camps and sports camps. Teens looking for something to do during the day should check out our “Teen Extreme Day Camp Adventures.” Participants get to attend trips to a Diamondbacks game, Big Surf Waterpark, and Arizona Zipline Adventures. 

We have day trips for our seniors as well. There are two trips left to Mt. Lemmon, and a steamboat trip on Canyon Lake. Our senior center has a wide variety of activities, including games, physical fitness classes and arts and crafts. 

Are sports your thing? We have open gym for basketball and pickleball, with our pickleball league starting up in July. For our youngest residents we have the “Tots & Me Story Art” classes and the “Nature to You: Youth Garden Education Series.”

Marana In The Media: Preparing for 2019 monsoon

The Marana News did a story on how Pima County and local communities are preparing for the monsoons. The Town of Marana was featured prominently. 
 
Aside from Pima County, local towns like Marana are readying and restructuring their “storm preparedness plans” after last year’s downpour. 

“We’re a pretty big town, so we try to make sure we spread our staff and resources out evenly,” said Daniel Silva, street supervisor for Marana’s Public Works Department. 

The Public Works Department arranges Marana into four districts to better manage equally spreading support during monsoons. These district divisions are one of the main changes in this year’s storm preparedness plan. 

During a monsoon on July 10, 2018, a Union Pacific train derailed between Avra Valley and Twin Peaks roads, scattering 27 rail cars across the train tracks and surrounding area. Whereas public works previously organized its support systems in east and west directions, during the derailment and subsequent cleanup, the department realized it would be more efficient to organize from north to south. 

“Last year was quite a test,” Silva said. “But we came together as a town and managed to get through it.”

UPDATE: Overnight lane closures on Interstate 10 near Ina Road set for June 12-14

Motorists who use Interstate 10 near Ina Road should expect overnight lane closures and possible delays Wednesday, June 12, through Friday, June 14, for striping work.

The following lane restrictions will be in place from 8 each night to 5 the following morning:

• Westbound I-10 will be reduced to a single lane on Wednesday, June 12. Drivers on eastbound I-10 may also encounter intermittent lane restrictions.

• Eastbound I-10 will be reduced to a single lane on Thursday, June 13.

• Eastbound and westbound I-10 will have intermittent lane closures on Friday, June 14.

Drivers should proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down and watch for construction personnel and equipment.

Scott Schladweiler appointed Interim Water Director

Deputy Town Manager Erik Montague has appointed Scott Schladweiler as Interim Water Director at the Town of Marana. He will fill the role held by John Kmiec, who has accepted the position of Deputy Water Director at the City of Tucson. Schladweiler’s appointment is effective June 17.

Scott has over 21 years of experience in the design, construction and operation of water and water reclamation systems.  He joined Marana in 2014 as a Utilities Engineer and has served as the Deputy Water Director for the past three and a half years.  Prior to joining Marana, Scott spent over a decade at Tucson Water where he was responsible for numerous large-scale programs for the design and construction infrastructure and recharge facilities, as well as administrative and policy related programs.

Tangerine Corridor Project wins the Timothy M. Ahrens Partnering Award

2019 Timothy M. Ahrens Partnering Award.

Accolades have been pouring in in for the Tangerine Road Corridor Project since its completion in 2018. Now, this joint Town of Marana, Oro Valley, and Pima County project can add the 2019 Timothy M. Ahrens Partnering Award from the Pima Association of Governments and the Regional Transportation Authority to its list.

The success of the project was demonstrated in the following areas: achieving a common goal, embracing regional stakeholders, resolving conflict, improving communication on the project with all audiences, incorporating team-building activities, delivery of a quality product, finding innovative funding solutions, and perpetuating the spirit of cooperation.

The Town of Marana partnered with the Town of Oro Valley, Pima County, the Psomas Design Team and contractor Tangerine Corridor Constructors (TCC) - a Granite Construction/Borderland Construction on the project, to improve a five-mile segment of Tangerine Road from Dove Mountain Boulevard/Twin Peaks Road to La Cañada Drive.

The newly constructed roadway delivered to the public:

• A four-lane roadway with landscaped medians 

• The elimination of dip crossings and upgraded culverts to provide 100-year flood access

• Pedestrian and bicycle facilities

• The installation of additional turn lanes and signalization at key intersections

• Wildlife linkages for wildlife corridors along this stretch of roadway

Tom Houle served as the Project Manager for the Town of Marana.

The Tangerine Road Corridor Project was selected as one of Public Works Projects of the Year by the American Public Works Association’s for 2019 in the category of Transportation - $25 million to $75 million. In addition, it was also named as the Southern Arizona Branch of the American Public Works Association also named it Project of the Year, Transportation, $25M-$75M category. 

Additional awards include the 2019 IPI Partnered Project of the Year Award from the International Partnering Institute, and the 2018 Arizona Transportation Partnering Excellence Award.

Overnight lane closures on Interstate 10 near Ina Road set for June 9-12

Motorists who use Interstate 10 near Ina Road should expect overnight lane closures and possible delays from Sunday, June 9, to Wednesday, June 12, for final striping work.

The following lane restrictions will be in place from 8 p.m. each night to 5 a.m. the following morning:

• Eastbound I-10 will be reduced to a single lane on Sunday, June 9. When work ends early Monday morning, eastbound lanes are set to shift to their new permanent location. Drivers on westbound I-10 may encounter intermittent lane restrictions.

• Westbound I-10 will be reduced to a single lane on Monday, June 10. Drivers on eastbound I-10 may encounter intermittent lane restrictions.

• Eastbound I-10 will be reduced to a single lane on Tuesday, June 11. 

• Eastbound and westbound I-10 will have intermittent lane closures on Wednesday, June 12.

Drivers should proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down and watch for construction personnel and equipment.

AMENDED Traffic Alert Twin Peaks-Blue Bonnet Road Gravity Sewer Project

Because of mechanical problems, the traffic control changes originally scheduled to begin Wednesday June 5, have been delayed until Friday June 7. Details below: 

On Friday, June 7, the contractor will begin sewer installation along Hartman Lane between Avenida Tierra Alta and the cul-de-sac on Hartman Lane, just south of Eaglestone Loop. (SEE MAP) This closure will be in place 24-hours per day.

• Southbound only turn movements will be permitted from Avenida Tierra Alta to Hartman Lane. 

• North and southbound travel will be permitted on Hartman Lane between Cortaro Farms Road and Avenida Tierra Alta. 

• There is no access to Cortaro Farms Road from Hartman Lane north of Avenida Tierra Alta.

Residents and the traveling public should watch for informational signs with detour information.

Emergency access will always be provided.

The above work schedule may be impacted by weather or mechanical failure.
During the sewer pipe installation, there will be extensive trenching and 
large equipment entering and exiting the work area.                                                                                                                                           
 Motorists should remain alert and use caution when driving near construction activities.

Pima County Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department (RWRD) and their contractor, Achen Gardner, have begun installation of a 15-inch sewer interceptor line along Hartman Lane, between Linda Vista Boulevard and Cortaro Farms Road.

The contractor began work south of the intersection at Cortaro Farms Road and is working northward toward Linda Vista Boulevard. The sewer installation along Hartman Lane is expected to take approximately 5 months to complete. 
Sections of Hartman Lane will be completely closed to motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists in the area where the contractor is working.

Traffic Update: Sanders Road at Santa Cruz River

On Tuesday, June 4, Brown and White, Inc. will be preforming bridge maintenance at the Santa Cruz Bridge on Sanders Road. Traffic may be delayed for a short period of time due to lane closures. Work will take place between the hours of 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and be completed in one day.

Coachline Boulevard Reconstruction update

Lane restrictions on Coachline Road between Silverbell and Twin Peaks.

The Town of Marana is currently working on the Coachline Boulevard Reconstruction and Pedestrian Crossing Improvements. The work is being completed by Sunland Asphalt & Construction Inc.

On Friday, May 31, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. the contractor will pave a portion of Continental Reserve Loop south of the Silverbell Road intersection (near the QuikMart). Continental Reserve Loop will be closed to all traffic at its intersection with Silverbell Road. This closure will be in place from 4:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m..

On Wednesday, May 29, the contractor began the final paving operation on Coachline Boulevard, between Twin Peaks and Silverbell roads. Southbound Traffic only will be permitted during this operation. Motorists should expect intermittent side street delays during this work as paving crews move through intersections.

Paving is scheduled to be completed by Monday, June 3, depending on weather conditions or other unforeseen issues.

• Bicycle traffic will not be permitted through the work area. Bike traffic is asked to use sidewalks.

• DO NOT park vehicles in the area of construction. They will be towed at owner’s expense.

• Watch for heavy equipment and large trucks entering and exiting the work area.

• Please use caution whenever passing through the construction zone

Marana looking for artist for roundabout

The Town of Marana has been awarded grant funding through the Pima Association of Governments (PAG) Transportation Art by Youth (TABY) program to fund a public art project for the Downtown Marana/Marana Main Street Gateway. The Town is soliciting qualifications from artist for the design, construction, and installation of the public art project. The Artist will work with the Town’s representative to develop the design and construction of the art to be installed at the Marana Road roundabout.

As the future location of the Town’s planned Downtown Marana and Marana Main Street area, this public art will feature a modern design in a simultaneous effort to acts as a visual centerpiece and gateway to the Town’s Downtown/Main Street area.

The intended design should incorporate the following:

• Be clean and forward-looking in design

• If possible, refer to aspects of Marana’s heritage and natural environment

• Be conscious of the surrounding area’s overall vision for downtown Marana

• Be mindful of sight distances for traffic safety reasons

• Take advantage of the concentric nature of the roundabout, potentially utilizing a 360 degree view

• Complement the established materials board used for the landscape architecture piece included in the roundabout – See separate Attachment ‘A’ Landscape Materials Board.

• Take into consideration Downtown Marana Overlay District guidelines – See separate Attachment ‘B’ Marana Overlay District Guidelines

• Serve as a welcoming presence, acting as a gateway to Downtown Marana/Main Street.

Upon selection of the qualified artist by the Town, a design concept shall be developed in collaboration with Town Staff representatives, the selected artist, pre-selected local students, the local instructor, and Town of Marana Citizens’ Forum members, or any combination thereof.

The Town anticipates that the timeframe between artist submission of design proposals and award of contract may be lengthy, based upon the schedule of grant disbursement. The PAG TABY grant was awarded and disbursed in February 2019.

The Town anticipates that the timeframe for artist recruitment, concept design, construction, and installation to be as follows: artist recruitment phase - May 2019, design phase – June – July 2019, construction phase – August – September 2019, and the installation phase – September – October 2019. These timeframes are subject to change.
