MARANA- The Marana Police Department is receiving funding from the federal government to purchase a 3D scanner to help with the documentation and prosecution of violent crime scenes.
The department requested the grant money from Congressman Juan Ciscomani’s Fiscal Year 2024 Community Project Funding through the Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies.
According to Marana PD, the scanner can document a scene in diagram form, allowing law enforcement to record highly accurate measurements. 3D scanners document crime scenes within a 3D space and can help to create 2D top-down diagrams allowing law enforcement and prosecution to view spatial relationships between evidence within the scene. These diagrams can be very helpful in the successful prosecution of violent crimes.
“A 3D scanner will help the Marana Police Department meet the ever increasing technology needs for crime scene investigation. 3D scans will help us to fully document crime scenes in addition to photography and video,” said Crime Scene Unit Supervisor Brian Aronson with the Marana Police Department.
The 3D scanner will assist the department in increasing investigative services to not only the Marana community, but also to citizens throughout Southern Arizona.
The Marana Police Department would like to thank Congressman Ciscomani for his service and visit to the department to view how the technology will be used.
