The Arizona Department of Transportation is scheduled to begin work on the Interstate 10 and Ruthrauff Road traffic interchange reconstruction project on Monday, Jan. 13. The project will be located directly south of Marana, but may affect Marana traffic. Full interchange closure to begin in late winter/early spring 2020.
Ruthrauff Road/El Camino del Cerro at I-10 and the ramps between I-10 and Ruthrauff Road are scheduled to close in late winter or early spring 2020, and all work is scheduled to be complete in late 2021.
I-10 will remain open to traffic throughout the project, with any lane restrictions on the interstate occurring overnight. For several weeks, motorists should expect intermittent lane restrictions and possible delays throughout the work zone. Additional notices will be shared as restrictions are scheduled.
Key elements of the project include:
Lowering I-10 beneath Ruthrauff Road/El Camino del Cerro Raising Ruthrauff Road/El Camino del Cerro over Davis Avenue/Highway Drive, the Union Pacific Railroad and I-10Widening I-10 to four lanes in each direction Widening Ruthrauff Road/El Camino del Cerro to two lanes in each direction Reconstructing the I-10 frontage roads to connect to the elevated Ruthrauff Road/El Camino del Cerro.
The project is designed to improve safety and traffic operations on both I-10 and Ruthrauff Road/El Camino del Cerro. For more information, go to azdot.gov/RuthrauffTI.
Currently, passing trains stop all traffic on Ruthrauff Road, which causes backups onto I-10. In the new configuration, traffic on Ruthrauff Road/El Camino del Cerro will pass over the railroad tracks and I-10, eliminating the at-grade railroad crossing.
In addition, the interchange reconstruction is part of a series of projects to increase capacity on I-10 between Ruthrauff and Ina roads. Drivers should proceed through the work zone with caution, slow down and watch for construction personnel and equipment.
The I-10 and Ruthrauff traffic interchange project is included in the Regional Transportation Authority's roadway improvement list. The Regional Transportation Authority is an independent taxing district with a mission to deliver multimodal transportation projects that improve our region’s mobility, safety and environment. The district’s voters approved the 20-year RTA plan in 2006. To date, the RTA has invested over $1.2 billion generated by the RTA’s half-cent excise tax within Pima County to improve your quality of life and support the region’s economic vitality.
